THE CREW OF THE USNS COMFORT PROVIDED IMMEDIATE MEDICAL CARE, SHELTER, LOGISTICAL SUPPORT, AND A COMMAND CENTER FOR MEDICAL OPERATIONS TO THE ENTIRE ISLAND OF PUERTO RICO, AT A TIME  WHERE MOST OF THE ISLAND, SPECIALLY HIGHLY POPULATED METROPOLITAN AREA OF SAN JUAN, WAS EFFECTIVELY WITHOUT RELIABLE ELECTRICITY FOR WEEKS. THANKS TO THE USNS COMFORT, THOUSANDS OF HIGH RISK WOUNDED, ELDERLY, AND SEVERELY HANDICAPPED THAT WOULD OTHERWISE DIE, WHERE GIVEN QUALITY FREE CARE, ROUND THE CLOCK, 24/7, PROBABLY BECOMING THE TIME THE WORLD'S LARGEST ER FOR WEEKS. AN ASTONISHING AMOUNT OF DIFFICULT SURGERIES TOOK PLACE ABOARD THE SHIP, AND EVEN BABIES WERE BORN THERE IN THE DAYS AND WEEKS FOLLOWING HURRICANE MARIA.
ITS OBVERSE, WHICH SEEMS TO BE GOLDPLATED, FEATURES A LIFE SAVER DONUT IN WHITE AND RED AT THE CENTER, WHICH READS "USNS COMFORT." AN ARM ENDING ON A FIST POINTING STRAIGHT UP COMES FROM WITHIN THE DONUT. IT HAS TWO SNAKES COILED TO IT, AS WELL AS WINGS, AS IF TO REPRESENT THE ANCIENT CADUCEUS OR SYMBOL OF MEDICINE WISDOM. BEHIND IS A PUERTO RICO FLAG, WITH MEDICAL CROSSES AT EITHER SIDE, WITH GOLDEN LETTERING AT THE TOP, WHICH READ "HURRICANE PARTY 2017". SURROUNDING THIS IS AN OUTER CIRCLE IN NAVY BLUE AND WITH GOLDEN LETTERING, WHICH READS "PUERTO RICO, USA / STRONG HANDS LASTING IMPACT."
THE REVERSE, WHICH SEEMS CLAD IN CHROMED NICKEL WITH ENAMEL, FEATURES THE SEAL OF THE UNITED STATES NAVY. THE EDGE FEATURES A SERIAL NUMBER, YEAR OF MANUFACTURE, AND MINTER'S MARK.
CONDITION OF THIS MEDAL IS
SUPERB, IN AN "AS NEW" UNCIRCULATED CONDITION, AS SHOWN IN THE PHOTOS.  IT WILL SHIP INSIDE A 2" X 2" BCW COIN FLIP INSIDE CARDBOARD OR OTHER PROTECTIVE MATERIAL TO PREVENT SCRATCHES AND NICKS WHILE BEING SHIPPED.
